Land of the free
At what point do we stop being the land of the free. With over 50,000 federal laws as of 2020 and hundreds of new ones being added yearly, when does the term “land of the free” stop being applicable. I guess you need to start at the basics, and ask what is freedom? According to Webster’s dictionary freedom means:
The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
Either way obviously we do not have this kind of freedom anymore. So you now have to ask what did the forefathers mean when they called the US, the land of the free. All I found was.. The United States of America claims to be the land of the free because women and men are free here to do whatever they wish.
Or maybe land of the free is from the founding promise of America.
These individual rights included freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to keep and bear arms, the rights to privacy against unreasonable searches and seizures, due process rights, property rights, and minimal regulatory authority of commerce.
Obviously that is not the case. There is no real free press and business is extremely regulated. Just for a start.
So maybe they meant, people can say what they want. Free speech is in the Constitution and the founding promise. But then I’m thinking that if you verbally insult a police officer or judge is not going to go well. The US clearly states that free speech means that the government may not jail, fine, or impose civil liability on people or organizations based on what they say or write, except in exceptional circumstances.
You also have to ask is free speech in the press, really a good idea? I mean giving people with huge public influence the right to lie or give their biased opinions, seems like a bad formula. With this route, it is just a matter of time before there will be liberal media and conservative media, all catering to their market however they feel pays the bills best. I’m sure CNN and Fox will be on the front line if this ever happens.
So when does free speech become bad?
I think never. I think as long as the speech is not driven by a business like media or the huge companies secretly running America. Speech should always be free. Yes, that means cussing out a cop, calling politicians pigs, and telling your X how you really feel.
Unfortunately this is not the case, try telling a judge how his biased corruption is a disgrace. It will not end well. And the description of free speech even says businesses (well organizations) can say what they want. Luckily there is a law that stops them from blatantly lying, called false advertisement.
In the United States, there are state and federal false advertising laws that prohibit various types of deceptive advertising, misleading labeling, and similar practices. False advertising laws provide important rights for consumers, arming them with the ability to seek monetary damages when they’ve been misled.
The reality is we don’t have free speech, and we are definitely not living a life of freedom. In fact just about every country I’ve visited has much more freedom than the US of A. We give our civil liberties because of fear and laziness. We have some convoluted comparison of a worse society that really isn’t relevant in our day and age. Freedom is not about being more free than Russia in 1940 or Venezuela. It about being free to do what you want, without hurting others. Without taking away other people’s freedoms.
Even though some freedoms are not good, we are still far from being the “land of the free“.
I’m not saying we have a bad system, even though we probably do. I’m just saying that calling the United States of America the land of the free, is like calling a goldfish free for being able to roam his fishbowl.
I think the solution is fairly simple. Cap the federal laws at 10,000. This would put pressure on each law to matter more. It would allow a reasonable amount of laws that people could actually learn. Maybe even have a class in high school for it. It would allow more freedom for this country to breathe and get back to the way our forefathers bleed for the hopes it would be.
Let’s end the federal loop holes and secret agendas. And get back to a society we can believe in and trust.
